They write specifications, even for small things. Even for themselves. Even when no one will read it. The act of writing the spec is how they sharpen what they mean.
They verify aggressively. They run things. They write tests. They don't trust the model's output, or their own first attempt, until they've seen evidence.
They build small things often. Real things, for real users — even if the real user is just themselves. The thing that ships teaches more than the thing that stayed in draft.
These four habits are the next unit. The point here is that the cutting edge lives in habits, not in announcements.

The engineers who chase the cutting edge as a place tend to feel behind all the time. Every announcement makes them feel further behind. Every new model release resets their workflow. They live in a low-grade anxiety that they're missing something important happening elsewhere.
The engineers with the practice don't feel that. They notice the announcements, take what's useful, ignore the rest, and keep going. The new model arrives. They try it. If it fits, they integrate it in an afternoon. If it doesn't, they keep using what works.
